In the project CIVITAS PORTIS, five European port cities work together – with European support – on implementing smart, innovative and sustainable mobility solutions to improve access to their cities and ports. This four-year project (from 2016 to 2020) involves the cities of Aberdeen, Antwerp, Constanta, Klaipeda and Trieste. In addition, the Chinese port city Ningbo is involved as follower city. The CIVITAS PORTIS project is coordinated by the City of Antwerp.
Antwerp is a thriving city in the north of Belgium and is Europe’s second largest port by tonnage. The major flows of citizens, commuters, visitors, together with logistics and freight transport lead to a challenging mobility situation. In CIVITAS PORTIS, Antwerp focuses on improving the governance structure involving all stakeholders, developing innovative multimodal mobility solutions, gathering and using data, encouraging behavioural change, and optimizing freight transport. The main objective is to create the right context and mindset for a modal shift towards sustainable modes of transport, and keep the city and port accessible and liveable.
